The handicraft industry of Nepal has sought better export facilities at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), the only international airport of the country.

Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) has urged the TIA authorities to ease customs related procedures and cut other administrative formalities as it would enable them to better access overseas markets and to boost exports of handicraft items.

Representatives of FHAN met Mr. Toyam Raya, Customs Chief TIA, and updated him regarding the problems faced by them and urged him to ease the procedures.

FHAN claimed that local handicraft exporters face several bureaucratic hurdles at Customs.

During the meeting, Mr. Raya assured that the customs procedures would be eased and efforts would also be made to cut unnecessary administrative hurdles.

Moreover, Mr. Raya said the Department of Customs would modify the handicraft export policy to boost the sector.

Employing over thousands of people, handicrafts is a cottage industry in Nepal that serves as a key foreign exchange generating industry for the country.

According to FHAN, around 40 percent of the handicraft items produced in the country are exported to 70 countries across the world.
