For the fiscal ended on July 15, 2012, Nepal’s handicraft exports grew by an impressive 32.31 percent from previous fiscal’s Np Rs. 3.11 billion (US$ 35.3 million) to about Np Rs. 4.11 billion (US$ 46.7 million), the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) said.

Nepal’s handicraft exports grew on account of enhanced participation of Nepali handicraft makers in international trade fairs, and an escalating value of the US dollar against the Nepali rupee, FHAN said.

Among the handicraft products, textile handicraft exports from Nepal grew by 33.99 percent year-on-year during last fiscal, while exports of non-textile handicraft items for the period soared by 30.86 percent over previous fiscal, FHAN stated.

With a year-on-year rise of 43.11 percent and 25.98 percent, woollen items and felt products respectively stood to be the second and third largest export earning items during the last fiscal.

Pashmina exports for the period grew by 10.89 percent year-on-year, cotton goods by 53.59 percent, silk items by 79.11 percent, hemp goods by 49.18 percent and allo goods by 90.74 percent. However, exports of Dhaka products declined by 17.29 percent.
