Propped up by the Government’s efforts like launching a whole range of new designs and redesigns of products in the market, Malaysia’s handicraft sales have surpassed the target of RM 300 million set for the current year.

Malaysia’s handicraft sales have so far registered RM 320 million this year, a sharp rise compared to RM 140 million sales in 2011, according to the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (MHDC).

The increase in sales is mainly due to the Government’s ongoing efforts to improve quality of handicrafts produced in the country and ensuring the industry’s growth.

Of around 2,675 new products incorporating new designs produced during the year, 1,669 items, particularly batik products, have been commercialized and well-received.

The National Creative Industry Policy, introduced by Information, Communications and Culture Ministry, has also played a major part in resuscitating the Malaysian handicraft industry and encouraging sales.

MHDC presently engages in marketing of handicraft items of Sabah and Sarawak. The items produced in the two regions have high commercial value.
