Government is considering the introduction of contract labour for handicraft workers so as to improve the current labour laws.
Textile Ministry proposed the Labour ministry that the handicraft workers should be excluded from the Industrial Disputes Act and contract labour be introduced, which will allow companies to hire employees and fire them as per the work schedule.
Firms will engage workers on a temporary basis and pay them according to the days worked.
This step is expected to generate over 47.2 lakh jobs for artisans and workers, while it provides a strong push to handicraft exports sector.
According to sources, the government will accept this proposals but since the Industrial Disputes Act needs to be modified, the process may take some time.
However, the labour ministry is considering introducing a clause to allow at least 50 days pay to workers to ensure compulsory wages.
