To ease the task of formulating policies, planning and decision-making for the handicraft sector, the Indian Government has undertaken a task of carrying out a census survey of handicraft artisans in the country.

The census work is being carried out by renowned agencies based on different parameters, Minister of State for Textiles Panabaaka Lakshmi informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

According to the Minister, the census would help the Government to derive an estimate of the number of artisans engaged in handicraft art in various segments, localities and the sector’s contribution to their family income.

Besides, the census would also prove helpful in arriving at estimates regarding raw-material requirement, production, allocation of daily work hours and seasonal calendar.

As per the findings of the survey so far, around 6.886 million artisans were engaged in India’s handicraft sector during 2010-11.

The country-wide census of handicraft artisans conducted way back in 1995-96 cited engagement of around 4.761 million artisans in the industry at that point of time.
