Handicraft exports from India reached US$ 665.24 million during April-June this year, posting a rise of around 12.49 percent compared to exports worth US$ 591.36 million made during the corresponding period of last fiscal, data from the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) shows.

The rise in handicraft exports is in spite of sluggishly moving demand from key Western markets like Europe, as growing demand from new markets like China, Africa and Latin America has balanced the loss, while demand from the traditional US market has also started recovering.

Commodity-wise, exports of hand printed textiles grew by 8.47 percent from US$ 74.48 million in April-June 2012 to US$ 80.79 million during April-June this year.

Similarly, exports of shawls as artwares grew by 34.24 percent from US$ 16.18 million to US$ 21.72 million and that of embroidered and crocheted goods by 5.87 percent from US$ 142.92 million to US$ 151.31 million.

During the month of June itself, handicraft exports jumped 11 percent over June 2012’s US$ 161 million to US$ 178 million.

The items that positively contributed to the rise during the month include hand printed textiles, whose exports grew by 35.7 percent year-on-year and shawls as artwares which grew by 40 percent year-on-year.

Last fiscal, India achieved its handicraft export target of US$ 3.3 billion.

Jaipur, Jodhpur, Saharanpur and Moradabad are the main handicraft centres in India that serve as a source of livelihood for over one million people, and cater to the domestic as well as international markets.

Around 60 percent of the handicrafts produced in India are shipped to the EU and the US.
