Nepal’s handicraft exporters are looking for better opportunities for handicraft promotion in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). The decline in exports to the traditional markets such as the UK and the US is one of the reasons for exporters trying to explore new untapped markets.

Dilip Khanal, director general of Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) said the need to explore newer destinations for the promotion of handicrafts has risen due to falling exports in the traditional markets and a balancing act has to be instigated, The Himalayan Times reported.

As BRICS countries are promising destinations with a growing economy, FHAN has urged the Government of Nepal to provide financial aid for promotional programmes and to conduct trade fairs in these countries.

A recent cabinet meeting decided to provide FHAN with the two ropanis (1 ropani = approx. 508.72 sq m) of land for the construction of a Handicraft Design and Development centre (HANDECEN). The land has been provided on the premises of the Department of Cottage and Small Scale Industries, in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.

FHAN would be receiving an assistance of Np Rs. 240 million from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) for setting up HANDECEN.
