Home based workers urge for recognition

Home based workers of the country are exploited by the middlemen and NGOs by paying low wages for work done.

Nakshi-kantha makers of the country only get Tk1,500 for stitching a kantha. But average price of same product is Tk3,000 and even fetches Tk7,000 at a city outlet.

A good deal of concentration and talent are required for making nakshi-kantha as it takes months to get completed.

These problems faced by workers are mainly due to lack of national policy for home-based workers.

Although they make a significant contribution to the national earning, they are ignored in terms of support from the Government.

Despite the demand by home based workers to recognize them as industrial labourers, policy makers are still to approve their demand.

Even after facing all these difficulties, they play an important role in fighting unemployment in a society.
