Lack of raw materials, a growing concern for handicrafts

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) survey, around 35 percent of the rural manufacturers, in Vietnam, face shortage of raw materials. Demand for handicrafts is rising continuously and the supply of raw materials is unable to keep up.
Over 40 per cent of crafts are exported to 100 foreign countries, while turnover is growing significantly.
Do Chi Cuong, Deputy Director, MARD, this problem is rapidly expanding needs immediate attention.
Bamboo, sedge, wood, terra cotta and rattan are major earning products.
Currently there are 2,017 craft villages countrywide, providing more than 11 million jobs. There are also 500 villages officially recognized as standard-bearers for various crafts.
