A three month long exhibition at New York that started on October 3 displays antique Kashmiri artworks in spheres of sculpture, painting and calligraphy. Kashmiri artworks, whose origin dates anywhere between the 2nd and 20th century, are the center theme for the show.
Titled 'The Arts of Kashmir', the exposition will continue till January 2008 and will meanwhile showcase creations from Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic art. Additionally, it will also exibit a variety of stone & bronze sculptures, carpets, shawls and embroidery for which Kashmir is most widely acknowledged.
Asia Society, a New York based pan-Asian body has organized this art exposition and its main objective is to cement a bridge between people and institutions of Asia and US.
A total of 130 artworks are put on display at the exhibition, which is considered to be one of the biggest in featuring artistic tradition of Jammu and Kashmir. The event will also highlight one of the oldest art work, a 4th century terracotta tile that portrays abstainers and birds unearthed from Srinagar suburb Harwan.
