Self-Help-Groups (SHG) have found a new way to empower women in rural areas of Ladakh by providing them with training for weaving quality carpets.

In 2003, under the water-shed development scheme of the rural department of Jammu and Kashmir, more than five self-help groups were formed by the women of Sabu village in Leh- Ladakh.

It was later that the Handloom Training and Production Center was established in Sabu village with the aid and assistance from an NGO.

The training program imparted by the Government extends to month and in winters every year; the women assemble at the center to make handicraft goods that sells extremely well in the market.

Self-Help Group of Sabu village presently produces over 30 carpets in the two months of winter season and sells these in the market at prices ranging from Rs5500 to Rs7200 per pair.

Apart from providing employment for the women of Leh, the Self-Help-Groups have also been successful in establishing income generating units. Besides, it has also immensely contributed to boosting the economic status of the people of Ladakh.
