A need to redesign and reposition Khadi goods was felt at the All Indian Exhibition of Khadi and Village Industries products.

At the inauguration of a recently held trade fair event, T Balakrishanan, Principal Secretary, Industries Department said that khadi products should be given adequate significance and not be considered as only a cloth for the mediocre.

Khadi has been adopted by people belonging to various strata of the society and even though its cost of production is high, people who fancy natural fibre like cotton and silk would undoubtedly opt for this material.

What is required is proper marketing and promotion for khadi sector as only through this mean can the producers benefit. Presently, workers engaged in khadi production earn a meager Rs25-75 a day. However, if this wage scale is allowed to continues, the country may completely loose its khadi industry which has until now been India's pride.

Newer export policies for khadi industry and better infrastructure is the need of the hour and with improved conditions will emanate a flourishing industry that will add value to the country's economic growth.
