During the just-passed week, Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, unveiled Pink Jambu Songtik shawls, a mix of songket and batik.
Pink Jambu's songtik design comprises of the Royal Terengganu Songket Textile and has mixed the two Malaysian textile heritage together.
Jambu's CEO and Songtik Design Director, Tengku Marina Ibrahim informed that, the idea to launch Songtik commenced two years back, when she was invited by the Royal Terengganu Songket, an ancient brand under Yayasan Tuanku Nur Zahirah, to craft a few pieces of songket for their songket revolution book.
Ibrahim has been a part of the industry since 18 years, but she seemed to have gain more knowledge after meeting Dr June Ngo, the Royal Terengganu Songket Textile designer and production director. Ibrahim continues that she met Dr Ngo while working on the book and as the latter explained in details about batik, Ibrahim gaine dmroe information and knowledge on the same.
Prior to the launch, while addressing the press, Ibrahim informed that, it was a meaningful mix of two crafts, as in the process one gets to learn and apply more modern techniques to portray the two crafts in a more contemporary manner.
Ibrahim further said that, shawl designs have been inspired by the domestic flowers such as bunga melur (jasmine sambac), kenanga (ylang ylang) and bunga cempaka. More so, along with hand crafted designs, the finest materials such as silk and lurex yarns were used to create the shawls.
Added Dr Ngo, post many discussions the concept and idea was decided for each songtik as each of them was different as one side of the shawl was batik whereas the other was songket.
