Handicraft exports post 22% surge in August

Increased demand from the US and EU markets offered a 22 percent fillip to India 's handicraft export, escalating it up to US $369 million in the month of August this year against the export totaling to $303 million in August 2009.

70 percent of Indian handicraft exports goes to the US and EU. The products such as imitation jewelry, wood-ware, shawls as art-ware and art-metal wares recorded maximum growth in exports by about 37 percent, 30.16 percent, 26.97 percent and 22 percent, respectively.

These exports showed a growth of 21.71 percent to $960 million, during April-August, this year. Such a positive trend is expected to continue in coming months which has started since September 2009 after the adverse impact of global economic recession.
