Handicraft training centres in JK boost local crafts

The Jammu & Kashmir Government, with an aim to boost its handloom and handicraft sector has set up some 653 centres in the state that provides specialized training to the youths in various crafts.

Most of these training centres have been set up in rural areas of the state, and they provide specialised training to the youths in various areas of crafts including weaving shawls, carpets, gabba, embroidery work, namdah, papier mache, chain stitch and wood carving.

These centres train about 7,000 craftsmen each year who in turn find employment in the industry, and serve the purpose of uplifting the local craft.

These centres have been a great support and have facilitated the preservation and promotion of local crafts. Besides, they help in the economic development of the region.
