The United Nations will launch a project to create an inventory of India’s art forms, craftsmanship and other intangible cultural heritage. The ‘wiki-style project’ will be executed through crowd-sourcing and other means engaging with UNESCO, UNDP and the Indian ministries of culture and textiles, UN resident coordinator in India Yuri Afanasiev said recently.

A number of India’s countless intangible cultural heritage forms, such as folk music, art, textile design, craftsmanship are disappearing fast, Indian media reports quoted Afanasiev as saying.

On October 24, the UN office in New Delhi marked the UN Day by displaying the country’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage. A total of 13 intangible cultural heritage elements from India have been inscribed till date on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The new year-long project, tentatively dubbed ‘A snapshot inventory of intangible cultural heritage’, aims to capture those elements in a capsule, said Afanasiev. (DS)
