Govt invites entries for handloom awards

The government of India has invited entries for the newly instituted awards to be given for excellence in design development and marketing of handloom products, according to an official release. The awards are to be conferred to selected persons or institutions on the occasion of National Handloom Day on 7th August, 2016.

The ministry of textiles would confer five national awards and ten national merit awards in the field of marketing of handloom products and three national awards and six national merit awards in the field of design development for promotion of handloom products.

The awards would be given for outstanding contribution in the field of design development for promotion of handloom products for institutions including NGOs working in the handloom sector, individual designers and young designers.

In the field of marketing of handloom products, primary cooperative societies, apex cooperative societies, e-commerce platforms, exporters and private entities/entrepreneurs are eligible categories for the awards.

These awards have been introduced in accordance with the advice given by prime minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of first national handloom day on 7th August 2015. Modi said that ministry of textiles may institute awards in the fields of design development for promotion of handloom products and marketing of handloom products.

The application forms along with the guidelines and schedule of calendar can be downloaded from the website of development commissioner (handlooms). The last date of submission of entries is 15th March, the release said. (NA)
