Weavers’ cooperative societies in Kerala’s Kannur district will weave 5.7 lakh metres of fabric under the state’s scheme to distribute school uniforms for the next academic year. The scheme aims at strengthening the handloom sector. Over a lakh metres have already been woven, KT Abdul Majeed, general manager of the district industries centre (DIC), said.

About 836 looms of all the 36 societies under consideration are involved in producing the fabric, a report in a leading Indian English-language daily said quoting K.V. Santhosh Kumar, secretary of the Kannur Handloom Association. (DS)
