An all-seasons khadi emporium has been inaugurated in Kerala's capital city of Thiruvananthapuram by CN Balakrishnan, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries.

The emporium named Gramodyog Bhavan will stock khadi and other items produced by village-level cottage industries to be sold at reasonable prices.

The emporium will sell both cotton khadi and muslin khadi woven by units run by the Gandhi Bhavan, under the aegis of the Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, at several places in the district.

Besides khadi, carpets, pillows, bedsheets, pillow covers, and a broad range of silk embroidery and poly textiles, all handwoven, will also be available for the consumers. Many swadeshi items produced by the Khadi and Village Industries Department will also be on display.

Silk dress materials and saris will be stocked in the emporium, along with handicrafts and coir products like coir carpets and coir bags.

Until now, the Gandhi Bhavan used to organize an exhibition and sale of khadi during the Onam festive season, but with the opening of the new emporium, there will be a permanent venue available for craftsmen to display their products and earn income all-round the year, says Nanukuttan Nair, an official at the Gandhi Bhavan.
