Handlooms & handicraft fair begins in Patna

Several products prepared by the handloom and handicraft artisans of Bihar are on display at the 'Centenary year craft bazaar-2011' organized in Patna by the State's Department of Industries.

The fair, which would go on till September 25, is aimed at promotion of talent in the State. It also aims to provide the artisans a wider access to bigger markets, Industries and Disaster Management Minister, Renu Kumari Kushwaha said while inaugurating the expo.

The Minister stated that presently there are 18 handicraft institutions in the State, and it is planned to not only raise this number, but also to equip them with state-of-the-art technologies.

She informed that her Ministry even proposes to expand the Upendra Maharathi Shilp Anusandhan Sansthan.

Over the past six months, several investors have planned to invest over Rs. 20 billion in the State, according to CK Mishra, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries. He said that promotion of local talents is also one of the main aims of the department.

Several handloom and handicraft products are being displayed in around 110 booths at the expo. Also on display, at the expo, are saris with Madhubani embroidery priced in the range of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000.
