The government of northeast Indian state of Manipur is planning to set up a mega handloom cluster at Lamboi Khongnangkhong in Imphal West district in the state to fully exploit the Look East Policy of the Indian Government and introduction of railways in the state, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthojuam has said.

Having a proposed expenditure of Rs. 700 million, the mega handloom cluster would be set up under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Textiles, the Minister said.

Speaking after inaugurating a handloom cluster at Uripok in Imphal West district, the Minister said the state currently occupies third position in the area of handlooms and handicrafts in the country.

He said the South East Asian countries and mainland India may start treating Manipur as a dumping ground if the state fails to keep pace with changing trend.

He said the state government has already launched several pilot projects to enable the people of the state to benefit the most from the Union Government’s policy.

State Principal Secretary Commerce and Industries, O Nabakishore, said development of the handloom and handicraft industries has helped in resolving the issue of unemployment in the state to a greater extent.
