The Sri Lankan Government will establish 25 handloom villages, which would be spread across the island, by the end of 2013, Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced.

The handloom villages will be set up to encourage the rural people to produce handlooms, which have a high demand in domestic as well as export markets.

The setting up of handloom villages will also act as a measure to create new employment opportunities and to strengthen the rural economy, the Ministry said.

It is proposed that handloom training centres would be established at each of the 25 handloom villages, and about 500 craftsmen, 20 from each village would be trained and employed under the Government’s scheme.

The handloom sector in Sri Lanka is a US$ 13 million industry and the Ministry plans to further promote the sector and boost its exports to foreign countries.
