Pakistan extends expertise to Sri Lankan handloom sector

The Government of Pakistan is extending its technical expertise to the handloom sector in Sri Lanka.
 
In this regard, High Commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka, Major General (R) Qasim Qureshi presented a US$ 72,000 grant to Sri Lanka’s Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa.
 
The Government of Pakistan, through its High Commission in Sri Lanka, is collaborating with the Government of Sri Lanka to revive the handloom sector in Mirigama district of Sri Lanka, news.lk reported.
 
Under the Pakistan-Sri Lanka cooperation, 75 individuals in Mirigama district would be trained in making handloom fabrics. They would also be provided with handlooms, hand winders, accessories and raw material.
 
The project is aimed at strengthening the Sri Lankan handloom industry by providing self-employment to people in the area, as well as providing indirect employment to hundreds of people.
 
In addition to large-scale mechanized industrial textile units, Pakistan also has a developed handloom industry, which is a source of livelihood to thousands of families.
 
Brand names like ‘Khaadi’ and ‘Bunnat’ have secured international recognition for Pakistan’s handloom sector, owing to excellent quality, eco-friendly production, creative designs, and aesthetic appeal.
