The government of the North Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir has removed Value Added Tax (VAT) on some handloom products from the current financial year 2013-14.

The state government has fully exempted VAT on crewel fabrics, embroidered chain stitch fabrics and their made-ups from the ongoing financial year, J&K Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Sajad Ahmed Kichloo said.

After opening Special Handloom Expo-2013 at the Amarnath Yatra base camp at Sonamarg, the Minister said the government is making all efforts to uplift the living standard of weavers, Business Standard reported quoting PTI.

The Minister said 8,000 modern looms are being given to weavers, and around 15,000 weaver families were covered under the Weavers’ Health Insurance Scheme.

The Special Handloom Expo-2013 has been organized to display J&K’s handloom products and make them available at affordable prices to tourists and Amarnath pilgrims.

The 15-days Expo also provides a platform to handloom weavers to sell their goods directly to the consumers.

The Minister said the government has introduced various welfare schemes for the weavers and suggested launching awareness campaign for education of the weavers about the various welfare schemes so they can avail benefits from them.
