The handloom weavers of Bihar are seeking Geographical Indication (GI) for silk fabrics and saris manufactured in Bhagalpur region of Bihar. In this regard, a group of Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Unions in Bihar has approached the Chennai based Indication Registry, recently.

An application has been submitted to the registry, for securing a GI tag for the silk fabrics and saris, by the Bhagalpur Regional Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Union and six other organizations.

This GI status will legally curb the sellers who sell fake silk fabrics and saris as Bhagalpur-made-products and would definitely prove helpful for economic empowerment of the regional weavers, said an official.
