The traditional handloom sector, in Kullu in the state of Himachal Pradesh and in the area around it, is now on the verge of extinction, on account of the influx of power-loom shawls in the market. In the past, handloom sector made a decisive contribution to local economy as it is the key source of regional inhabitants' livelihood.

Weavers community in the state of Himachal Pradesh are experiencing financial crisis as the state government has refused to extend economic schemes to weavers' cooperative societies, leaving them without funds. Kullu district, alone encompasses over 12,000 handloom artisans.

These weavers now seek Central Government's intervention in this matter to take a decision regarding offering them loans and credits. Industry experts expect the Central Government to announce special schemes for weavers' development.
Weavers of the state seek Center's support on the lines of other north-eastern states and Jammu and Kashmir.
