The handloom sector including owners and workers have embarked on a nation-wide strike indefinite strike, in protest against the unprecedented hike in yarn prices.

According to an owner of a handloom factory, prices of yarn have nearly doubled in the last few months, with no corresponding increase in fabric prices.

The handloom sector employs around 15 million workers in the textile weaving sector, which includes 2 million handloom and powerloom weaving machines.

Handloom clusters include districts of Narsingdi, Narayanganj, Sirajganj, Pabna, Tangail, Kushtia and Gazipur.
