Karnataka Government has urged Centre to once again introduce 10 percent rebate scheme for handloom items, which was withdrawn around two years ago. At present, somebody who purchases handloom items gets only 20 percent rebate offered by the State Government.

Textile Minister, Gulihatti D Shekhar, while conversing with media after inaugurating Vastra Chittara, a handloom expo organized near Vijayanagar in Bangalore, said that, if extra 10 percent rebate is provided, then more customers could be drawn to handloom products.

As divulged by MD Lakshminarayan, Chairperson of Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, the State Government has demanded of the Centre to bestow them with similar assistance as provided to other bordering states. Where the State gets Central subsidy of Rs 200 million, the sum granted for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh comes to Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200 billion, respectively, he said.

The fair exhibits several cotton, woollen and silk products. Also, it exhibits items like furnishing material, bed sheets, silk and cotton sarees, carpets, and kambals.

The Karnataka State Handloom Development Corporation stall, 'Priyadarshini' presents its customers with an additional discount of 10 percent on sarees and bed sheets. Besides, the stall even displays traditional Kambals from Koodligi in Bellary, Guledagudda khana and Kinhal carpets.
