The government has instigated steps to boost the efficiency and earnings of the handloom workers, while generating around 21,000 new jobs in the sector.
This initiative came in line with the passing of a Tk 355.5 million worth of project for setting up a fashion design and training institute and a core centre for growth in development of handloom fabrics.
While the Japan Debt Cancellation Fund (JDCF) would provide Tk 350 million for the project, the rest of the funds amounting to Tk 5.5 millions would flow from the government exchequer. The Bangladesh Handloom Board on behalf of the Textile and Jute Ministry would execute the project scheduled for completion by June 2013.
The project is aimed at setting up a fashion design and training institute in Dhaka, while would also set up three sub-training centres in Kalihati in Tangail, Kumarkhali in Kushtia and in Sirajganj's Belkuchi.
The project is also intended at developing infrastructural facilities for imparting training to handloom workers, developing new designs keeping in view the market demand and likings of the customers and training the instructors and trainees of the vocational training institutes.
