Ethnic Manipuri handloom designs contest for GI status

Next to Lucknow's Banarasi sarees and Chikan works, Himachal Pradesh's Kullu shawls and Surat's zari craft, it may be the ethnic Manipuri handloom designs which would be granted the GI (Geographical Indication) status, as three motifs and handloom designs of this North-Eastern state are contesting for the status.

GI as an Intellectual Property Right ascribes quality, reputation and other features of a product to its place of origin.

The designs and motifs contesting for the status were acknowledged by a team of designers, academicians and specialists within the country.

A joint report in this regard has already been presented before the Manipur Government which has raised the issue before the concerned authorities.

A decision in this matter is likely to come soon.
