In an attempt to bestow the state's handloom industry with a new look and give it a lift, the Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a plan for modernization of 40,000 handlooms in the state at a cost of one billion rupees, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Surjeet Singh Slathia said.
Apart from this, the government will also augment credit facilities, raise productivity of the weavers through skill development, design and use of modernised handlooms, the Minister revealed.
He further said that, handloom is a labour intensive cottage industry, engaged in production of various items like raffle kani shawls, kishtwari blankets, curtains, bed-sheets, cushions, silk saris, etc.
