The students from the institute helped Pedana Kalamkari, which is an art of block printing using natural dyes on textiles, in Krishna district near Machilipatnam of the state get the GI tag status. They also provided suggestions and technical guidance to improve designs and product diversification to make their products more saleable.
The GI tag helps communities that are engaged in traditional production of particular products protect their identity and gain intellectual property rights. In the last 10 years, NIFT has helped over 50 traditional crafts and art forms get the GI tag. (HO)
