Despite an average production cost of Taka 12 per unit, electricity is sold at Taka 7 per unit, resulting in significant financial strain on the government.
Hamid stated that a gazette notification detailing the tariff adjustment would be issued shortly.
He clarified that electricity prices are influenced by global fuel costs, necessitating periodic adjustments.
The proposed increase, averaging 34 paisa per unit, will primarily impact the consumers using up to 50 units, with higher consumption brackets facing slightly larger hikes.
Highlighting the adoption of a dynamic pricing system, Hamid emphasised the need to synchronise domestic prices with global fuel fluctuations. He cited neighbouring countries' daily adjustments and noted disparities in fuel prices between Bangladesh and places like Kolkata.
Hamid’s remarks underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing aligned with production costs and global market trends. By implementing a dynamic pricing mechanism, Bangladesh wants to mitigate financial strain on the power sector while maintaining affordability for the consumers.
