China’s electricity consumption rose by 2.5 per cent year-on-year to 2.38 trillion kilowatt-hours in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, according to data released by the National Energy Administration.

Consumption increased across sectors, with the primary and secondary industries up 8.7 per cent and 1.9 per cent, respectively, and the tertiary sector climbing 5.2 per cent.

Electricity use in high-tech areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and 5G saw a 25.7 per cent year-on-year jump in the internet and related services sector.

Meanwhile, daily average consumption in charging and battery-swapping services surged 42.3 per cent, mirroring the expansion of China’s new energy vehicle sector, Chinese media reports said quoting the National Energy Administration.
