Dec 2023 production in German industry down 1.6% MoM: Provisional data

Production in the German industry in real terms was down by 1.6 per cent month on month (MoM) in December last year after price, seasonal and calendar adjustments, according to provisional data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

The less volatile three-month on three-month comparison showed that production was 1.8 per cent lower from October to December last year than in the previous three months.

Revised statistics show production decreased by 0.2 per cent MoM in November last year.

In 2023 as a whole, production was 1.5 per cent lower year on year (YoY) after adjustment for calendar effects. The biggest declines were recorded in energy-intensive industrial branches and in energy production.

Particularly sharp declines were registered in December 2023 in the chemical industry, an important sector and the construction industry. Although declines were less pronounced, production in December last year was also down in many other branches of economic activity.

In December 2023, the production of intermediate goods in Germany declined by 5.2 per cent, while consumer goods production decreased by 0.9 per cent. By contrast, the production of capital goods rose by 1.3 per cent.
