Electricity consumption in China soars in early 2024

China has witnessed a notable increase in its electricity consumption in the initial months of 2024, according to the National Energy Administration. The data points to an 11 per cent surge in power usage to 1.53 trillion kilowatt-hours in January and February, compared to the same period last year.

A detailed breakdown reveals that the industries, the primary and secondary sectors, experienced an uplift of 11.1 per cent and 9.7 per cent respectively in their power consumption. There was a 15.7 per cent jump in electricity use within the tertiary sector.

Households across China also contributed to the surge in electricity demand, with residential power consumption rising by 10.5 per cent over the same period in the previous year, according to Chinese media reports.
