German industrial production down 2.4% MoM in Dec after adjustments

  • Production in the German industry in real terms was down by 2.4 per cent month on month (MoM) in December last year after price, seasonal and calendar adjustment, according to provisional official data.
  • This was the lowest drop since May 2020.
  • It was down by 3.1 per cent YoY in the month after adjustment for calendar effects, and down 0.9 per cent quarter on quarter in Q4 2024.
Production in the German industry in real terms was down by 2.4 per cent month on month (MoM) in December last year after price, seasonal and calendar adjustment, according to provisional data by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was the lowest drop since May 2020.

It was down by 3.1 per cent year on year (YoY) in December after adjustment for calendar effects.

The less volatile quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) comparison showed that production was 0.9 per cent lower in the last quarter (Q4) of 2024.

After revision of the provisional results, production increased by 1.3 per cent MoM in November last year (provisional figure was a 1.5-per cent rise).

In 2024 as a whole, production was 4.5 per cent lower YoY on a calendar-adjusted basis.

In December last year, production in industry excluding energy and construction was down by 3.3 per cent MoM and dropped by 4.1 per cent YoY after seasonal and calendar adjustment.

The production of capital goods fell by 4.7 per cent MoM and the production of intermediate goods dropped by 3.3 per cent MoM. The production of consumer goods, however, rose by 0.9 per cent MoM.

In the capital goods and intermediate goods sectors, production last year was down by 5.6 per cent and 5 per cent YoY respectively.
