Bangladesh's Department of Environment (DoE) has penalised Tk 3.031 million to a textile dyeing unit for polluting water resources and farming land.
The penalty was imposed after a Rapid Action Battalion-1 team headed by DoE Director (Monitoring and Enforcement) Muhammad Munir Chowdhury cracked down on the factory.
The DoE's action was a result of several complaints received from the locals alleging that the factory had been emitting unprocessed liquid effluents into a canal and in agricultural land in the vicinity for over a decade.
The DoE said that that the factory was being operated illegally without obtaining permission for over 10 years. The DoE found around 95,000 cubic metres of liquid effluents discharged by the unit into nearby water resources, where the oxygen level was found to be below 1.3 milligram per litre.
Though the factory owners had installed an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in 2008, it has never been used. The DoE has directed the factory authorities to immediately discontinue discharging liquid effluents into the canal and effectively use the ETP.
