Bangladesh's Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a dyeing unit located in the suburb of capital Dhaka Tk 14.4 million.
A team of DoE officials found the dyeing factory releasing untreated chemicals into Bangshi River near Pakuria, where the level of dissolved oxygen was found to be 0.7 mcg/litre, which is very much lower than the standard 4.5 mcg/litre.
Besides the fine, the DoE team also ordered the owner of the dyeing factory to immediately resume the use of the effluent treatment plant (ETP).
Dyeing factories fall under the 'red category' of the Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (Amendment 2010), and it is compulsory for them to install and run an ETP.
