More than 30,000 jobs in the textile and apparel sectors in South African province of Western Cape were lost between 1995 and 2011, Mr. Alan Winde, Provincial Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, has said.

In other words, the Western Cape province lost over 50 percent of its workers in the textile and clothing sectors during the 16-year period.

During the same period, however, the number of persons employed by the wholesale and retail outlets grew from 211,000 to 318,000, according to legislator Rodney Lentit.

Mr. Lentit expressed optimism that the strategies deployed by the Minister for the growth of textile and apparel industry in the province, would lead to generation of new job opportunities.
