Spanish textile & apparel output declines 4.2% in 2012

The production of textiles and apparels in Spain dropped 4.2 percent year-on-year in 2012, according to the figures released by Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE or National Statistics Institute).
 
The dip in textile and apparel output, however, is less than the annual decline of 5.9 percent in Spanish Industrial Production Index (IPI) during the year.
 
In 2011, Spanish textile sector output fell by 2.4 percent year-on-year, while the clothing sector slumped by 12.2 percent year-on-year. In comparison, both the textile and apparel sectors showed a decrease of 4.2 percent in their IPI in 2012.
 
In December 2012, Spanish textile and garment sector production declined by 4.7 percent year-on-year and 13.5 percent y-o-y, respectively, while the IPI of Spanish manufacturing industry declined 8.5 percent y-o-y.
 
In 2012, category-wise, yarn production dropped 10.1 percent y-o-y, knitwear by 8.4 percent, textile processing by 5.2 percent, fabric production by 5.1 percent, apparel output by 3.6 percent and manufacturing of other textiles by 2.4 percent.
