The output of textile, clothing and leather sub-sector of the Zambian industry increased marginally by 3.5 percent year-on-year in 2012, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO).

In 2011, the textile, apparel and leather production in Zambia had declined by a substantial 54.7 percent year-on-year.

In the latest CSO monthly bulletin, CSO director John Kalumbi attributed the marginal rise in output to an increase in production of blankets and cotton processing activity.

However, the 3.5 percent year-on-year increase in Zambian textile, garment and leather sub-sector production was lower than the six percent year-on-year growth observed in 2012 for the entire industrial sector.

Earlier in January this year, Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Mr. Ashok Kumar had urged Zambians to take advantage of India’s expertise in textile sector to develop the Zambian textile industry.
