Trade unions warn of indefinite strike in West Bengal

Labourers of jute industry have threatened to go on strike for in indefinite period from December 6, 2006; this can hamper jute production severely in West Bengal.

Trade unions, which represent a large labour force working in jute mills, held a meeting with Labour Minister Mrinal Banarjee and discussed their problems. These unions have warned that if mill owners do not fulfill labour requirements, an indefinite strike is inevitable.

Meeting was also attended by jute mill owners of West Bengal. Trade unions highlighted that workers deserve dearness allowance worth Rs255 crores, gratuity worth Rs300 crores and Provident Funds worth Rs175 crores, but mill owners have kept these pending.
