Textile workers in east Alabama are struggling hard to secure their bread and butter, more so, since manufacturing units are shutting down rapidly at regular intervals.
Nearly 1,300 employees are on the verge of loosing their jobs and there is really nothing that can reverse this misfortune.
The Wellstone Mills plant in Eufaula closed in the first half of this month leaving 117 people jobless. Georgia-based West Point Home and South Carolina-based Springs Global are going to meet a similar fate in the coming months of February and April respectively.
Alabama textile industry has been continuously declining for several years and this only goes to show that the state lacks medical research, biotech investing, defense contracting and automotive manufacturing. The availability of the same has made its competitors thrive.
A major reason behind this steady decline in the development of Alabama's textile industry is stiff competition from international rivals who have an edge in terms of low wages, government subsidies and ready US retailers.
China, India, Pakistan and Central American countries have been the leading suppliers of apparel, making competition tighter for Alabama. Manufacturers in the state have already notified Government authorities about their decision to eliminate 3,600 jobs.
