Local industries to adopt nano-tech for development

A nano science project is all set to get launched next year by the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the private sector of the industry.
NANCO and Sri Lanka Institute of Nano Technology (SLINTEC) are the two institutes to be set up. The former would be housing the nano park, expected to be founded in Homagama.
This nano park will have the best equipped laboratories and other facilities that will enable the development of the private sector companies as well as the research institutes.
On the other hand, SLINTEC will be set up in joint venture with the private sector, which will invest around 50 percent of the Rs5 billion project.
Once constructed, the institute will carry out research programs for enhancing industrial products forming the key export items. Besides, it will also emphasize its research study on crucial industries like apparel and chemical.
Innovations resulting from the institute would also be absorbed by the member founders. This nano-tech project will employ some of the best nano scientists having an expertise in the sphere.
Some of the private sector companies involved in the project are MAS Holdings, Brandix, Jinasena, Dialog and Sri Lanka Telecom. Moreover, some countries have also extended their support to assist the project technically. Although to be established in Biyagama, SLINTEC will be relocated to the nano park in Homagama.
