Nearly 500 weavers from different regions of Tamil Nadu had recently come together for a meeting under Dalapati Stalin Handloom Weavers Association. They discussed various issues and plan to put forward their demand to the State Government for getting free power supply.

K P R K Perumalraj, Association Secretary said that, they have asked the Government to buy woven items like sarees and dhotis directly from the weavers by establishing procurement Centers rather than purchasing it through private agencies.

By doing this the weavers will get fair price for their products without delay and their profit margin will increase as no middle party will be involved.

The Association also wants the authorities to help the handloom sector financially by providing a grant of Rs50,000 for each loom and also an interest free loan of Rs0.5 million for establishing handloom units.

Experts from the sector suggest that for uplifting the sector the authorities can make wearing of handloom clothes compulsory for the Government officials.
