Construction has begun on two petrochemical plants in Zhangzhou in Fujian province, one of which was under controversy, when it was proposed to set it up in Xiamen, two years back, but was aborted when locals raised environmental concerns.

Now the same plant will produce 1.5 million tons of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) at a site in Zhangzhou. Nearly 5 billion Yuan is expected to be invested in this PTA project which also includes a sewage treatment and environment management facilities.

Construction also began on another green field petrochemical project to manufacture 800,000 Paraxylene (PX), to be built with an investment of 13.8 billion Yuan by the Tenglon Aromatic PX Co Ltd, out of which 830 million Yuan has been earmarked to address environmental issues.
