Balnamore Mill, one of most recognizable landmarks in Ballymoney could see major refurbishing, 50 years after it closed down. Provisional approval has been given by the Planning Service to the revival plans of the centuries old mill.
Refurbishing process of the mill will start soon if the council approves this decision in its forthcoming meeting. It is also planned to undertake residential, business, light industrial, community facilities as well as associated development works.
The mill that was unoccupied since its closure was one of the largest spinning mills at the beginning of the 19th century and initially offered job to around 400 people. It was sold to Ballymena's Braid-water Spinning Company, which expanded it by introducing new water-powered turbines.
In 1920s, it was purchased by Hale, Martin & Co Ltd. and during 1930s the mill found it difficult to carry on when the linen industry went into decline, and ultimately in 1959 it downed its shutters.
