TCF sectors to launch ethical trademark campaign

Textile, clothing and footwear industry of Australia is set to hold a campaign to promote its products to the ethical consumers. A green kangaroo or koala would be the symbol of this new campaign.

The industry is looking to develop an ''ethical quality'' brand and trademark, to highlight that, the garment has been made without sweatshop labour and is free from harmful chemicals and has taken animal welfare into consideration.

Among a lot of government-made recommendations, for maintaining the competence of Australia's $4.4 billion clothing and footwear industry amid the cheap imports from India and China, promoting a clean and green fashion industry is one.

If the proposal is implemented, the trade mark would be the first of its kind across the world. But before the body which has been given the responsibility to develop the trademark, began the process, issues relating to mulesed wool created an ethical problem.

This issue is quite complex as employers, manufacturers and unions of the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries Innovation Council have different outlooks in this regard, said Mr. Philip Butler, Chairman of the Council.
