Sri Lanka is the third major source of foreign direct investment (FDI) of Bangladesh, following US and South Korea, noted Mahbub Uz Zaman, the Bangladeshi High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, in a meeting with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister, DM Jayaratne, at his office in Colombo.

While discussing the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Mr. Zaman said that, majority of Sri Lankan investors are involved in leather, garment, and chemicals industries of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh employs almost 2,000 Sri Lankan people, of which most work in the apparel industry, according to the High Commissioner. Around 400 Sri Lankan's visas are approved per month to enter Bangladesh.

Vast possibilities are there in future for both the countries to diversify their trading activities, predicted Zaman, specially if one observes that, the trade between the two countries is not that significant at the moment.
